The boy quilt

When we moved to Tennessee, Wallace transitioned from a toddler bed to a twin size. This change brought with it a need and opportunity to make a new quilt for my growing boy.

Wallace loves fabric, and he’s pretty vocal about his opinions on anything that affects him. So I thought it was wise to ask for his input on his new quilt. I already knew I wanted to go with a simple layout which is akin to a giant Trip Around the World or Granny square. I think a simple design perfectly compliments busy fabrics- they even each other out.

He was thrilled to go wild with my Cotton + Steel and he chose an array of colors and prints. I decided on color order and began cutting. I had to halt halfway through assembling the top while I took care of some other projects (and also because I was short on fabric on a few prints). But I think it worked out well because I was able to finish the top on Thursday and then he turned three on Friday. So it was sort of a present, right?

I’m not sure if he would agree. On the one hand he repeated squealed “quilt for me?!” while hovering over me as I finished stitching it, but on the other he was very put out when I explained that the whole quilt wasn’t finished, only the top. It made for a difficult bedtime because he wanted to use it, but at least I know he’s happy with it and will want to use it when the time comes.

On that note, I plan to send this out for professional quilting because I know he won’t want to wait for me to hand quilt it. That is my preference but he’s antsy, and I think machine quilting will be just fine.

I’m happy when my kids are happy. It makes sewing for them such a joy. He tries to pick the blueberries off to gobble them up, and points to all the animals. I’m excited to get this finished up for him so he can enjoy it on a daily basis.

I’ve got more to share this week, so stay tuned.
