Progress Report : Field Study Feather Bed Quilt

  I used Free Spirit Solid in Winter White for the background! I always try to use a solid from the same manufacturer as the prints I’m using so that the materials are as similar as possible.ReplyCancel

Hello!

I just put together my strips & taped the pattern together and am very frustrated with the pattern as it is shown from Anna Maria Horner, as well as Fons & Porter, and your blog; Turning the patter 180 degrees does not produce the results as shown… The pattern of the feather goes diagonally across both sides, not one side up and the other side up from the vein.

In order to get the pattern to go up & out, we (my engineer husband and me with my extremely analytical mindset) had to flip the pattern and change the direction 90 degrees. I have wasted a lot of fabric as I used fat quarters and can only get four sides out of each 22″ section. We also needed to add extra strips to any strip-set that was only 12″ tall.

IF anyone is considering using this pattern, make your strip sets out of 1/4 – 1/3 yard strips of 45″ fabric, not fat quarters and good luck with setting your pattern to turn out how you wish!ReplyCancel

  You are correct. This same method is outlined in my tutorial here. https://oliviajanehandcrafted.com/?page_id=4708 I show how to alternate the direction of the creature template so there is virtually no waste, and to flip the template to get the feathers in the proper direction. I have made many quilts using this pattern and method. I hope you love your quilt and that it will help you to make this beautiful pattern with less frustration. Happy sewing! ReplyCancel
