Independence Day festivities won’t begin until later this evening, so I chose to use the first part of the day to finish up a custom quilt for the shop.
She purchased the 36″ x 36″ handquilted version of this quilt. Her only other request was the the color scheme be antique white, grey, and blue. Other than that, I had total freedom. I ran with it, and knew immediately Parson Gray’s debut line would be the perfect fabric for this quilt. Its quite manly, but has enough range in shade that I could make it quite fitting for a baby boy.
I handquilted inside each square, and then did two layers of quilting around the outside of each square. The interior thread color is antique white Perle cotton, and the middle layer is a light blue. The outer layer of stitching on the blue squares is a dark [almost navy] blue, and I used a dark grey for the outermost layer on the grey squares. I chose to stitch only a single layer around the middle square as I did not want to detract from the “A” which I feel is the focal point of the quilt.
There are much darker fabrics in the line, but I did try to steer away from those in favor of the lighter shades simply because I wanted to avoid giving the quilt a harsh look. Since I went with the antique white for the background of the quilt, I wanted the squares to be light so as not to add too much contrast. But I also chose to keep the colors light so that I could let the stitching add pops of color and some visual interest.
(The back is not quite this blue. Its actually a much lighter shade of blue.)
I’ll be sending out this quilt tomorrow. I do hope baby “A” likes his quilt! It was a joy to make, and working with this color scheme was such a welcome change for me.
I hope you have a wonderful Fourth of July! Stay safe!
