Sometimes being married means you get out of your comfort zone and into your husband’s. For me, this means I must listen to his opinion on guns, guns, and more guns. This also means I must be educated on how to properly handle a gun. I’m sure many of you disagree with gun ownership, but this lifestyle is what works for our family.
Of course, for Justin this means that he has to give me his opinions on fabric, quilts, bags, and so on. He’s gotten better about it, and really does give me his real and thought-through opinion. One of my goals for the year is to learn how to knit. I have one set of circular needles but no yarn. So last night when I had nothing to do, I sat down with my knitting book, my needles, and some embroidery floss (I know you’re not supposed to use embroidery floss, but its the only thing I had) just to learn how to cast on. When I didn’t understand the diagrams, Justin grabbed the floss and needles and showed me how to cast on. I have to chuckle thinking back on this. My gun loving manly man husband teaching me how to knit, tackling this new adventure right beside me.
Well back to my new adventure of learning how to shoot and handle a gun… I’ve shot rifles, and haven’t really thought of it as being a big deal. However, with Justin’s work hours, I’m often left home alone at night with Layla, and we have zero street lights on our street. With alot of break ins happening, I really feel the need to know how to handle myself if I am ever in a dangerous situation. Justin has insisted that I learn how to use a handgun and get one for home protection.
On Monday Justin, one of his friends, Emilee, and me all went out to the range. I don’t think we did very much that was right, but we got a good feel for handling a gun safely. I’m thinking I might be getting a gun for Valentine’s Day. (how romantic, right?) Also, Emilee and I will be taking a self-defense class. Now I that I have lept very far over my comfort zone (or perhaps just extended it) I think its high time Justin and I become knitting buddies.
In what ways do you and your husband differ in terms of your interests? What ways do you compromise for the sake of each other’s fun?
I’m still waiting on my computer but I’m still hoping to be back to a regular blogging schedule soon! Also, I promise not to start writing about guns on here. I’m still more June Cleaver/ Lucille Ball wannabe than anything else!
