Getting my mind off of me

As a human, it is so easy to focus on myself. I look at what I want, what I need, and how to make my wants seem like needs. There are good days and there are bad days. I’m sure you can relate. Last week was simply not a good week for me. Nothing seemed to be going well at all. I won’t go into it, but you get the picture.

When I came home on Saturday evening from an afternoon out with Emilee and Layla, I found a small bird by our front door. I thought for sure it couldn’t be dead, but after I took Layla and Olivia Jane inside, I went back out to have a look. Sure enough, that sweet bird was dead. I tried to figure out what happened, assuming it was probably killed for sport by some troublemaking neighborhood kids, but that was not the case. This bird was as flawless as it could be. I was sad for it, thinking its life had ended far too soon. I really didn’t want it to get torn apart by vultures or some other scavenger since it had managed to die without a mark, so I brought it inside and wrapped it in tissue paper and put it in a shoe box. On Sunday we had a little bird funeral and buried it by the hibiscus tree.

A bird is such a small creature, and they often go without any notice. I wasn’t having a very good week, and truthfully some serious stuff was going on, but realizing that bird had gone through something more serious than me helped me to stop thinking about me and think about him. Isn’t it pathetic that sometimes it takes something dying for us to see our own issues? Wasn’t he beautiful?

I’m still working on cutting out pieces for the Spinning Stars Quilt. I hope I can finish that today, so you won’t have to get hit with another deep post tomorrow! I’ve got some really cute items for the shop that Emilee‘s taking pictures of today.
