I went to my first quilt show today with Layla and Abigail! Woot! I was not in it, but I did enjoy going and seeing some of the work from the Disconnected Piecers Quilt Guild, Inc. Much of the work was about as opposite from my personal style as one can get both in pattern and fabric choice, but I could appreciate the work that was put into every quilt I saw. Here are a couple that I liked:
I thought these two made wonderful use of scrap fabric. They may not have used scraps, but they are a great example of how scraps could be well utilized nonetheless.
These quilts showed fantastic detail and, with the exception of the cat picture, were all appliqued.
The real highlight of the show was finding one very fantastic vendor. The moment I saw some of Anna Maria’s LouLouThi, I thought, “Where is this place located?!” There are not many local shops around here that sell fabric I am willing to buy. But Sundara Fabrics was an exception. Though they are based in Gainsville, they have a wonderful online shop with fabulous choices. What they may seem to lack in terms of quantity, they more than make up for in their unique selection. Many of their fabrics are hand dyed batiks from India and Africa. These are not your grandmother’s tye-dye looking monochromatics batiks. They are by themselves beautiful and stunning works of art. I cannot wait to get my hands on some and create something wonderful with them! I told Justin I wasn’t going to spend any money, but that didn’t end up being true. In my defense, I didn’t know there were going to be any vendors there, especially this wonderful shop! So I bought some fabrics I would not have normally chosen had I not seen how beautiful they were in person. And they feel glorious! I’m sure Justin will understand when he sees them.
First up, I bought these two Kokka prints. They are just so unique, and I can’t wait to make something fantastic for Layla with them. I’m fairly positve the cupcake print will become an apron. And to pass up the school bus print would have been pure idiocy on my part, and since I’m no idiot, I bought it.
Next I purchased this fabulous fat quarter bundle of Miscellany. This super soft organic cotton bundle features the hand drawn works from Julia Rothman and can be found here.
This is my favorite. I saw the bottom print, and knew I was not going to be able to sleep tonight if I didn’t buy it. You know how that is, right? Just get it, so you don’t have to regret not getting it! This logic does not hold up with everything you want, of course, but I think it works here because the fabric is just that beautiful. Anyway, this line is called Maman and it is from Cloud 9 fabrics. It is organic cotton and I just love the feminine style of the line. You can find this collection here.
These two fat quarters I picked up simply because they were a terrific price. The green print is from Lizzy House and can be found here. The yellow and green print doesn’t have the name of the designer or line on it, but I got it anyway!
I had a wonderful time today! I hope its not very long before another quilt show comes to town. Now I need to make good use of the rest of Layla’s naptime and install the strap adjusters that just came in the mail on Layla’s penguin backpack so I can finish it up and start filling it with goodies!
