the scraps have been attacked

I recently raided my scraps and found that I had much more variety than I expected. This was a wonderful surprise and I’m so happy I was able to make the Wheel Quilt with all those luscious colors!

What do you think?

I was in love with the Crosshatch Sketch in White and Black after using it for Layla’s backpack, and I knew the print would make a perfect background for the color wheel. To me it tied together the artsy feel of the quilt.

For the backing I chose to use a yellow gingham from October Afternoon’s Fly a Kite. I don’t know why I chose yellow, but I am very happy with the result.

Even the binding is scrappy on this quilt. Its all white, but its made entirely of white scraps I had leftover from a recent project. I’ve never used solid white to bind up a quilt, but I thought it would work better than a saturated color; I couldn’t choose just one of the colors from the wheel for the binding.

Sticking with my 2012 resolution, I handquilted this baby. It was so much fun to pick out coordinating Perle 5’s. I kept it super simple, stitching in the ditch between each colored wedge and meeting in the middle. I quilted around the inner and outer circles with white. I didn’t do any quilting in the black and white background area. Typically I would not have left that much space open without any quilting, but this quilt is going to hang in Layla’s room and I don’t plan on laundering it every week so I figured I could get away with it. Who knows, I may add some additional quilting later, but I’ll just have to wait for the inspiration to strike.

I’m entering this quilt into the Festival of Scrappiness. I’m just dying to win one of the bolts of Warm and Natural batting. That’s the kind of batting I use for every project, and I have many unfinished quilts simply because I can’t afford the batting. So maybe if you wish for me to win it, it might actually happen. I really, really want it!

I do hope you are enjoying this gorgeous Sunday afternoon!
